The latest roadblock for House Republicans' 'big beautiful bill': Senate Republicans
Briefly

House Speaker Mike Johnson is pushing a bill aimed at major spending cuts and tax breaks aligned with Trump's agenda. Despite efforts to advance it before Memorial Day, the proposal faces strong opposition from Senate Republicans. Critics, including Senators Ron Johnson and Rand Paul, deem the spending cuts inadequate and criticize the approach of package legislation. There's also significant backlash against proposed Medicaid changes from Sen. Josh Hawley, emphasizing that many feel the plan must be revised to succeed in the Senate.
"Unfortunately, it's a sad joke," Wisconsin GOP Sen. Ron Johnson said Wednesday, highlighting the criticism from Senate Republicans regarding the proposed package.
Sen. Rand Paul described the spending cuts in the proposal as "wimpy" and "anemic," reflecting widespread dissatisfaction with the House bill among Senate Republicans.
Sen. Johnson remarked, "It was a mistake for leaders to try to pass so much of Trump's agenda in one single bill," advocating for a more segmented legislative approach.
Sen. Josh Hawley voiced his opposition to the Medicaid changes, stating, "I'm not going to support this bill from the House, in this form. It has to change before it can pass the Senate."
