Ernst was first elected in 2014 on a pledge to cut government spending with the slogan "Make em squeal." Ernst struggled to balance Republican voters aligned with President Trump's Make America Great Again movement and those who did not, and faced criticism for campaign gaffes and town-hall comments, including a remark about Medicaid cuts and a public exchange about Ebola and presidential leadership.
