Joe Gebbia, cofounder and former chief product officer of Airbnb, has been named the United States' first chief design officer. An executive order created the role and the National Design Studio under the "America by Design" initiative. Federal agency chiefs must consult with Gebbia and produce initial results by July 4, 2026. Gebbia aims to modernize government mobile apps and websites to deliver Apple Store–level design, user experience, and modern software. Gebbia left his operational role at Airbnb in 2022 and joined the White House DOGE office in February to address slow, paper-based retirement processes for federal employees.
"My directive is to update today's government services to be as satisfying to use as the Apple Store: beautifully designed, great user experience, run on modern software,"
"time to fill the digital potholes across our Nation" and "update the Government's design language to be both usable and beautiful."
"an injustice that our interfaces are horribly out of date."
