Targets on Our Backs': CDC Staffers Describe Hostile' Workplace to Politico
"along with the never-ending feeling that we have metaphorical targets on our backs, a lot of employees feel like they have literal targets on their backs,"
"Any time that we are asked to unexpectedly meet with senior politicals, we assume it's to fire us It's basically a hostile work environment."
"We know of people who have now received three RIF notices,"
"We've never heard the man even speak."
Hundreds of previously fired CDC employees returned to work after a government shutdown-ending deal, but many face repeated reduction-in-force notices and rehirings. Eight current or recently fired staffers described months of mass firings, retractions, re-firings, and high-level resignations that devastated morale. Employees described a pervasive sense of being targeted and characterized the workplace as hostile and unstable. Leadership communication has steeply declined, with the acting CDC director sending only one agency-wide email since August. Some staff contend the turmoil is intentional and point to perceived personal animus from HHS leadership toward the agency. Project teams have been dismantled amid firings, leaving key surveillance work disrupted.
