"His release is more than one family's relief - it is a reminder that justice is possible when we stand together."
""Today, we celebrate freedom," the social media post read. "After months of unjust detention, our brother and community member, Paul Dama, has finally been granted asylum and released.""
""I kind of felt like it was a kidnapping again," he said."
Paul Dama, manager of Suya Joint, was granted asylum this week by Judge Yul-Mi Cho and released from ICE custody after months of detainment. Dama applied for asylum in 2020 after fleeing Nigeria following kidnapping and threats from Boko Haram and is legally authorized to work in the U.S. He was stopped while driving to church on Father's Day and held at Strafford County Jail in Dover, New Hampshire. His sister, Cecelia Lizotte, chef and owner of Suya Joint, posted updates, raised legal funds, and expressed concern about the restaurant’s operations during his detention. The Department of Homeland Security can appeal the asylum decision until Oct. 23.
