California's Proposition 50 congressional maps were cleared for use in this year's midterm elections when the U.S. Supreme Court denied an emergency appeal on Feb. 4. The maps are expected to enable Democrats to gain about five House seats while reducing Republican-held seats by roughly half. Plaintiffs including the California Republican Party and the U.S. Department of Justice plan to continue challenging the maps' constitutionality, alleging racial gerrymandering that favors Hispanics. Any court ruling that overturns the maps would not affect elections until 2028. Of California's 52 House seats, 43 are held by Democrats, eight by Republicans, and one is vacant.
