"the services provided by the non-profits doing immigration work are incredibly worthwhile."
"political consensus to fund these services"
""As vice chair of the Budget and Appropriations Committee, I have a front row seat," Dorsey said. "In this space there is such a climate of fear that philanthropists and law firms have for supporting immigration services," he said, but "we need their backbone, we need their billions.""
Supervisor Matt Dorsey rode an e-bike to tour the immigration court and ICE field office at 630 Sansome St. He pledged to find funding for pro-bono legal aid and praised nonprofit immigration services. Dorsey emphasized the Bar Association of San Francisco’s attorney-of-the-day program as an essential lifeline for asylum-seekers who almost always appear without counsel. He said there is political consensus to fund these services despite the city’s budget deficit and noted a climate of fear among philanthropists and law firms about supporting immigration work. Millie Atkinson arranged the tours to show officials conditions inside the ICE facility, which faces an ACLU lawsuit alleging inhumane holding-cell conditions.
