Two years after the Austin Police Oversight Act was passed, the Community Police Review Commission (CPRC) began its mission amid delays. A crucial ruling led to the public disclosure of police misconduct files, allowing CPRC to hold its first meeting in May 2025. During its second meeting on June 20, commissioners learned about the process for reviewing police misconduct cases, which includes investigations by both the Internal Affairs division and the Office of Police Oversight (OPO). Despite bureaucratic hurdles and impending legislative changes, the CPRC is committed to providing timely recommendations to the Austin Police Department's Chief.
The laws are in flux - indeed, the legislature is attempting to pass a law that would require reinstating G files for all law enforcement agencies across the state.
