Protesters gathered outside Rep. Nicole Malliotakis' office with gravestones symbolizing victims of President Trump's "Big Beautiful Bill". The bill, supported by Malliotakis, includes significant cuts to Medicaid and other welfare programs. The crowd chanted against the bill, highlighting the adverse effects on health care access. It passed the House by a narrow margin and is estimated to reduce health care coverage for 8.6 million people over ten years. The bill allocates nearly $700 billion in cuts from Medicaid, altering eligibility requirements for Americans seeking assistance.
The gravestones, gray and black with crosses and skulls painted onto them, stated things like: "Trump did this," "Couldn't afford insulin," "Died of Measles, age 3," "Ectopic miscarriage, NO ABORTION CARE."
The federal budget reconciliation bill passed the House of Representatives on a 215-214 margin last month, and passed the Senate on Tuesday.
The bill calls for almost $700 billion to be cut from Medicaid spending. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services reported that in 2023 Medicaid spending amounted to $871.7 billion.
Republican supporters of the legislation have characterized the cuts as rooting out fraud and waste, while the Congressional Budget Office estimates 8.6 million fewer people would have health care coverage.
