Staten Island Democrats supporting Mamdani after backing Cuomo in primary
Briefly

The Staten Island Democratic Party now fully supports Zohran Mamdani after initially endorsing Andrew Cuomo. Party Chair Laura LoBianco Sword emphasized that voters across the five boroughs prefer Mamdani, making it the party's duty to support the Democratic nominee. Mamdani, identifying as a Democratic socialist, garnered 37.5% of Staten Island's vote in the primary, though he lost to Cuomo who received 46.5%. Despite this, Sword noted Mamdani's unexpected strong performance among younger, progressive voters, encouraging moderate Democrats to consider his candidacy.
"It's not a matter of us deciding to support [Mamdani], that decision was made by the voters. The Democratic Party has an obligation to support the Democratic nominee," said Sword.
"Zohran did lose Staten Island, but not by a ton, and it's a lot closer than I think most people anticipated that it would be. He's bringing new people to the table, which is exciting," Sword said.
