Spike Lee revealed that his docuseries on Colin Kaepernick for ESPN was scrapped over a year ago due to creative differences. He stated he would not attempt to sell the project to other platforms, emphasizing that he has moved on from it. ESPN confirmed the halt in production, acknowledging the collaboration's hard work while stating that they collectively decided to discontinue the project. The docuseries, initially announced in 2020 and attached to Lee in 2022, was anticipated to showcase archival footage and new interviews of Kaepernick.
"That thing fell apart a year ago," Lee, 68, told Business Insider in an interview on Tuesday while promoting his latest movie, "Highest 2 Lowest." "No one had ever asked me about it. I was on a red carpet and a guy asked me the question, I wasn't going to lie."
"It's not coming out. That's all I can say," Lee responded to Reuters regarding the docuseries.
"ESPN, Colin Kaepernick and Spike Lee have collectively decided to no longer proceed with this project as a result of certain creative differences," the statement from ESPN indicated.
"No, it's unfortunate, but I mean, I've moved on," Lee said. "That was a year ago."
