SCOTUS just yanked away Trump's favorite toy & he's not handling it well - Queerty
"On Friday, the Supreme Court delivered our petulant president his greatest embarrassment yet, striking down his favorite way to badger other nations into submission. Since last April's ironically titled "Liberation Day," Tr*mp has imposed sweeping tariffs on imports from nearly every U.S. trading partner, including obscure and tiny islands with minimal economic activity. Executed in a slapstick manner, there was seemingly no strategy behind Tr*mp's tariff regime, outside of acquiring maximum leverage."
"He abruptly left a White House meeting Friday morning with the nation's governors, calling the decision a "disgrace." Last night, Tr*mp expressed confidence that the conservative court would uphold his power. "Without tariffs, what would you do? You know what? Everybody would be bankrupt, the whole country would be bankrupt," he said. "I've been waiting [for this decision] forever. The language is clear that I have the right to do it as president." The Supreme Court disagreed."
"For foreign policy, his tool was tariffs. The Supreme Court stripped him of that authority with a 6-3 ruling. Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Brett Kavanaugh dissented. "In its 21-page opinion, the majority said it was telling that for half a century, no other president had invoked the statute to impose 'any tariffs-let alone tariffs of this magnitude and scope,'" reports the New York Times."
The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that the president lacks authority to impose sweeping tariffs used to pressure other nations. The decision removes a central foreign-policy tool the president employed since last April's "Liberation Day." The tariff program targeted imports from nearly every U.S. trading partner, including obscure and tiny islands, and appeared aimed at maximizing leverage rather than following a coherent strategy. Three justices—Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Brett Kavanaugh—dissented. The president left a meeting with governors, called the ruling a "disgrace," and warned of economic collapse without tariffs. The majority noted that no prior president had used the statute in this way for half a century.
