Scoop: Schumer rallies Democrats as shutdown deadline looms
"Trump spent much of Tuesday essentially warning Democrats that during a shutdown he could do things like "cutting vast numbers of people out, cutting things that (Democrats) like, cutting programs that they like.""
""We are 10 hours away from government funding expiring simply because Republicans are not serious about keeping it open," Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said at a Capitol press conference."
"Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) told reporters that "there isn't any substantive reason why there ought to be a government shutdown." "If the government shuts down, it is on the Senate Democrats," Thune said."
Senate Democrats met and motivated each other to hold their ground against pressure from the administration. President Trump warned that a shutdown could result in cutting vast numbers of people out and eliminating programs Democrats favor. A small group of Democrats remain undecided, but there is almost certainly not enough Democratic support to pass a funding measure before midnight. Senate leaders traded blame, with Democrats faulting Republicans for not keeping funding open and Republicans saying Democrats are responsible if the government shuts down. Some moderates are key to any cross-party votes, while at least one senator already pledged support for the bill.
