Sheriff Christina Corpus testified before San Mateo County's board of supervisors amidst allegations against her. During this hearing, which she requested, she remained defiant. The process allows supervisors to remove an elected sheriff by a 5-4 vote, instituted by a recent ballot measure. Corpus's team of attorneys opened the proceedings by stating that the case centers on cultural changes rather than misconduct. Additionally, Corpus faces trials related to a civil grand jury that may recommend her removal. Legal challenges to the ballot measure have been dismissed.
"This case is not about misconduct, it is about change in culture, power, and money," said defense attorney Christopher Ulrich in opening statements, per Bay Area News Group.
"Finally, today, the Sheriff will get to tell the community about what happened," said Corpus's newest attorney, former Labor Secretary Tom Perez, told KTVU.
