US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that while the US respects Greenland's self-determination, it opposes any financial dependency on China. His remarks come as Greenland seeks independence from Denmark. Vice President JD Vance echoed this sentiment, critiquing Denmark's underinvestment in Greenland. Both officials, however, did not address polls showing that many Greenlanders oppose US annexation. Rubio's comments may jeopardize recent efforts to strengthen US-Danish relations, and echo previous territorial threats from the US regarding Greenland's future, despite reassurances of strong ties between the US and Denmark.
"What we're not going to do is let China come in now and offer them a bunch of money, and become dependent on China," Rubio told journalists.
I think they want to be independent from Denmark, and then once they do that, we can have a conversation about the relationship we'll have with the United States and Greenland," said Vance.
Neither Vance nor Rubio appeared to acknowledge that a large majority of Greenlanders oppose becoming a part of the United States, according to polls.
The new comments from Rubio are likely to undo steps taken earlier towards improving US relations with Denmark.
