"Serving the people of Southwest Florida has been the honor of my lifetime, Buchanan said in a statement. Every achievement worth doing began with listening to my constituents and fighting for their priorities. I came to Congress to solve problems, to fight for working families and to help ensure this country remains a place where opportunity is available to everyone willing to work for it. After 20 years of service, I believe it's the right time to pass the torch and begin a new chapter in my life."
"You f*cked me, Buchanan reportedly fumed at McCarthy."
Rep. Vern Buchanan, 74, will retire from Congress at the end of his term after serving since 2007. He represented Southwest Florida and spent his entire congressional career on the House Ways and Means Committee. Buchanan lost a 2022 bid to chair that committee to Jason Smith. Buchanan is the 28th Republican to decline a 2026 reelection bid, joining recent departures such as Neal Dunn, Elise Stefanik, and Dan Newhouse. The decision follows two decades of service and a stated desire to pass the torch and begin a new chapter, amid broader Republican turnover ahead of the 2026 election cycle.
