New York Attorney General Letitia James announced a settlement requiring Betar US to cease instigating or encouraging violence, threatening protesters, and harassing individuals exercising civil rights, with a suspended $50,000 penalty enforceable on violation. The investigation, which began in March 2025, found widespread persecution of Muslim, Arab, Palestinian, and Jewish New Yorkers driven by hostility toward protected groups, violating state civil rights laws. Findings included leadership references to keffiyehs as "rape rags," social media celebrating violence against Palestinians, multiple violent incidents, and a February 2025 stabbing of a pro-Palestinian demonstrator. Betar is seeking to dissolve its New York not-for-profit and wind down operations.
