Directors and managers of Portland art and cultural institutions reject President Donald Trump's description of the city as "war-ravaged" and "a hellhole." They point to years of increased attendance and city-owned downtown arts venue figures showing more people attending concerts, plays, dance performances and other events, indicating recovery from pandemic lows and lengthy 2020–2021 protests. Portland Opera Artistic Director Alfrelynn Roberts says the organization is attracting new fans and urged collective action. A federal judge placed on hold the attempted deployment of 200 Oregon National Guard troops, ordering control returned to Governor Tina Kotek under a temporary restraining order expiring Oct. 18, and the Department of Justice said it would appeal. Elected officials and business leaders strongly objected to the federal incursion and noted current demonstrations are primarily at an ICE facility about two miles from the downtown courthouse.
