Pete Buttigieg addressed U.S.-Israel relations, responding to criticisms regarding American aid to Israel amidst the Gaza conflict. He emphasized the need for American taxpayer funding to avoid actions that shock the conscience, noting the devastating humanitarian crisis. Buttigieg acknowledged the complexity of the issue but stressed the moral imperative against aiding a government responsible for starvation. He warned that the ongoing conflict represents not only a moral disaster but could also become a long-term catastrophe for Israel's future. His statements reflect a shifting perspective on the left regarding U.S. support for Israel.
I think we need to insist that if American taxpayer funding is going to weaponry that is going into Israel, that that is not going to things that shock the conscience.
But what's not complicated is that if a child is starving because of a choice made by a government, that is unconscionable.
So much of this is complicated... this is not just something that is on its face and in itself a moral catastrophe; it is also a catastrophe for Israel for the long run.
