PBS plans to cut its budget by 21% to address financial challenges following the defunding by Congress of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The bill's passage means PBS, NPR, and affiliated stations will lose $1.1 billion in federal funding over the next two years. To adapt, PBS is also reducing member station dues by $35 million, which represents a 15% decrease from their original budget. Additionally, member stations are being given more time to gather necessary funds to meet their dues obligations.
In an email sent out to PBS station managers on Wednesday, PBS president and CEO Paula Kerger announced that the organization plans to cut its budget by 21 percent to offset financial damage.
PBS' board of directors voted in favor of lowering the overall amount of dues it collects from member stations by $35 million, a reduction of about 15 percent.
