OPM failing to fulfill requests, say government auditors
Briefly

The Government Accountability Office issued a report highlighting 58 unresolved issues at the Office of Personnel Management, with 14 classified as priority recommendations. Key areas for improvement include IT systems to expedite retirement applications, effective workforce planning for IT staff, and better management of electronic records. Retirement processing is particularly criticized for longstanding IT management weaknesses. OPM's modernization efforts are inadequate, lacking key project management elements. OPM's failure to address workforce shortages hinders progress, despite a planned IT workforce strategy expected by March 2025.
"The Government Accountability Office (GAO) sent a report on open recommendations to Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Director Scott Kupor Wednesday, informing him of 58 unresolved issues identified by the GAO, 14 of which are important enough to be considered priority recommendations."
"Retirement application processing stands out in the report as a particularly egregious failure, with GAO noting that OPM has little to show for two decades of work 'fraught with IT management weaknesses.'"
"OPM has not yet demonstrated that it has incorporated key aspects of IT project management as part of its modernization effort," GAO noted.
"Workforce skill shortages are also going unresolved due to the lack of an action plan to fill needed positions - something GAO said OPM desperately needs."
