The Independent funds on-the-ground journalism covering reproductive rights, climate change and Big Tech, offering free access to reporting and relying on donations rather than paywalls. A Youth Endowment Fund study of 11,000 children aged 13 to 16 in England and Wales found more than half of teenagers used some form of online mental-health support in the past year, and 25% used AI chatbots. Young people affected by serious violence were more likely to use chatbots, with 38% of victims and 44% of perpetrators reporting chatbot use. YEF noted chatbots can appeal because they offer anonymous, anytime access, and a youth advisory board member warned that AI can be frightening for those in crisis.
