The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that New York residents who receive federal food aid will not get November SNAP benefits after the administration declined to tap roughly $5 billion in contingency funds during the federal shutdown. SNAP helps about one in eight Americans buy groceries and serves nearly 41.7 million people nationwide. Nationally, over 62 percent of SNAP participants are in families with children, 37 percent include older adults or disabled members, and more than 38 percent are in working families. In New York, 2,926,200 residents (15 percent) receive SNAP; 52 percent are in families with children; over 46 percent are in families with older adults or disabled members; and more than 31 percent are in working families. The most recent 2023 data show 12.3 percent of households were food insecure, 14.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line, and 18.6 percent.
