"We're going to talk about that later in the show. I mean, it's extraordinary because it was economic insecurity that got Donald Trump elected to begin with. But Trump is saying it's the shutdown's fault, right. That's what he said on Wednesday. Yet he isn't telling Republicans in Congress go work with Democrats. He's saying end the filibuster. Don't worry. Democrats will most likely never obtain power again. That's his message to his squad."
"Coupled with the message that if they do gain power, they're going to get rid of the filibuster day one. So, you might as well do it first, because otherwise we're going to be the ones suffering the consequences. And so, you know, that's not going to happen. Majority leader Thune has made very clear he doesn't have the votes for it. It wouldn't bother me, quite frankly, because the filibuster has become something of a tool that much more favors red states."
Stephanie Ruhle's live MSNBC segment on The 11th Hour covered President Donald Trump's call to end the filibuster amid a government shutdown. Ruhle's phone rang loudly during the broadcast and she answered, telling the caller they were the only person she would ever answer during the show. Guests Tom Rogers, Christina Greer, Steve Liesman, and Sami Sage debated political strategy, with Rogers noting that eliminating the filibuster could be motivated by fear Democrats would use it if in power and arguing that the filibuster currently advantages red states with disproportionate Senate representation. Majority Leader Thune lacks votes to abolish it.
