Millions of vulnerable people missing out on benefits, Martin Lewis' charity warns
"From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging."
"Millions of vulnerable people are missing out on life-saving benefits often worth thousands of pounds due to a postcode lottery for support in claiming, a new report has found. Services to help people access unclaimed income which they are entitled to but do not receive are overstretched and inconsistently provided across the country, according to the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute (MMHPI), a charity founded by Martin Lewis."
"Around 24 billion is going unclaimed every year, according to the latest figures from research group Policy in Practice. A survey by MMHPI shows that only a third of people with mental health problems and financial difficulty had accessed income maximisation support like welfare advisers and benefit calculators, despite over half (52 per cent) reporting that they regularly run out of money to cover the basics. Meanwhile, nearly two-thirds of respondents (72 per cent) said they had no idea that these services existed."
Journalists are being funded to report on reproductive rights, climate change, and Big Tech, including investigations into PAC finances and a documentary about American women fighting for reproductive rights. Donations enable continued on-the-ground reporting and unrestricted public access by avoiding paywalls. Millions of vulnerable people miss out on life-saving benefits often worth thousands of pounds because local support for claiming is inconsistent and overstretched. The Money and Mental Health Policy Institute (MMHPI) reports that around 24 billion in benefits is unclaimed annually. Surveys show only a third of people with mental health and financial difficulties accessed income-maximisation support, while many were unaware such services existed.
