Military families sue Trump administration over gender-affirming care ban
""President Trump has illegally overstepped his authority by abruptly cutting off necessary medical care for military families,""
""This lawless directive is part of a dangerous pattern of this administration ignoring legal requirements and abandoning our servicemembers.""
""Effective immediately, all new accessions for individuals with a history of gender dysphoria are paused, and all unscheduled, scheduled, or planned medical procedures associated with affirming or facilitating a gender transition for service members are paused.""
Three military families filed Doe v. Department of Defense in U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland challenging a policy that prevents military clinics or insurance from covering gender-affirming care. GLAD Law and the National Center for LGBTQ Rights represent three servicemembers and their families, who had obtained such care through the military health system for over a decade before the policy change. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth issued a February rule pausing care and new accessions for individuals with a history of gender dysphoria. A federal court temporarily blocked those restrictions as unconstitutional in April, but Defense Health Affairs leadership moved to implement the restrictions in May while the Supreme Court allowed enforcement of a broader ban on trans troops pending litigation.
