Middle East: Australia to recognize Palestinian state at UN DW 08/11/2025
Briefly

Australia will recognize Palestinian statehood at the UN General Assembly. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese believes a two-state solution is the best way to end the violence in the Middle East and address suffering in Gaza. Albanese stressed that without permanent Israeli and Palestinian statehood, peace will remain unattainable. The decision aligns with efforts from other Western nations following the conflict escalation in Gaza. However, the Palestinian Authority's lack of control over Gaza, governed by Hamas, raises concerns about future governance in a potential Palestinian state.
"A two-state solution is humanity's best hope to break the cycle of violence in the Middle East and to bring an end to the conflict, suffering and starvation in Gaza," he told reporters in Canberra on Monday.
"Until Israeli and Palestinian statehood is permanent, peace can only be temporary. Australia will recognize the right of the Palestinian people to a state of their own."
"There is a moment of opportunity here, and Australia will work with the international community to seize it," Albanese said.
"The Palestinian Authority... does not control Gaza, which has been governed by Hamas for nearly two decades."
