A shooter opened fire during a morning Mass at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, killing two children. Public figures rejected offering only thoughts and prayers and demanded concrete action to stop violence against children. Critics called thoughts and prayers a lie and nonsense and blamed political obstruction for preventing measures that could reduce shootings. Calls emphasized the importance of elected officials being physically present with affected communities and using legislative power to pursue solutions. Community members appreciated prayers but stressed that these tragedies are avoidable and that past school massacres prompted similar unanswered calls for action.
I agree with the mayor. I'm not the thoughts and prayers. I'm so beyond, so beyond that, that nonsense, the lie of that. Because what we have are people who continue to stand in the way of actually doing something to stop the violence against their own kids. It is amazing to me. We watch young kids die in classrooms and now in church, and and all we get are thoughts and prayers.
Omar said she and the community she represents appreciate the prayers being offered, but she too called for action noting the multiple school shootings that have happened over the course of her lifetime. It is important for us to remember that these tragedies can be avoided. You know, we talked about thoughts and prayers and taking action when Columbine happened back when I was in high school, the congresswoman said. We talked about the devastation of Sandy Hoo
