"This campaign is so about the policies, the policies that improve the lives of people, and not the personalities."
"I was falsely arrested up in Michigan, tortured by the police."
Dakarai Larriett, 43, is a Birmingham-born entrepreneur and activist mounting a U.S. Senate campaign in Alabama where Republicans dominate and lawmakers have passed strict anti-LGBTQ+ laws. He emphasizes policy improvements over personality or identity. After graduating from the University of Alabama, he moved to New York and built a supply-chain career at L'Oréal, Whirlpool, and Louis Vuitton. He served on the Bronx Community Pride Center board, the National Harm Reduction Coalition, and the University of Alabama LGBT Alumni Association. He founded Gerard Larriett Aromatherapy Pet Care in 2012 and runs the global brand from Birmingham. In 2024 he was arrested in Benton Harbor, Michigan and filed a federal lawsuit alleging false arrest, abusive treatment, and that officers targeted him because he is Black and gay.
