Education Secretary Linda McMahon defended the Trump administration's freezing of federal funding for Harvard University and others on CNBC's Squawk Box. She emphasized that this action addresses antisemitism rather than alleged political bias, countering claims made by hosts Andrew Ross Sorkin and Joe Kernen. Harvard has filed a lawsuit against the funding freeze, arguing that some demands infringe on its First Amendment rights. McMahon stressed that the administration seeks to hold colleges accountable, aiming for constructive dialogue with Harvard and other institutions.
McMahon reiterated that, for her, it was a matter of holding colleges accountable for antisemitism on campus-not an alleged liberal bias.
I made it very clear these are not First Amendment infractions; this is civil rights... making sure that students on all campuses can come and learn and be safe.
The question is whether viewpoint diversity is really about free speech, Sorkin questioned during the interview.
This letter [of demands] that was sent to Harvard was a point of negotiation... and it was really not a final offer.
