Larry Summers said he will step back from public commitments to rebuild trust and repair relationships after emails showed continued friendly communication with Jeffrey Epstein following Epstein's 2008 guilty plea. Summers said he is deeply ashamed, recognizes the pain caused, and takes full responsibility for his decision to continue communicating with Epstein. Summers said he will continue to teach and his website lists several economics courses at Harvard. Released emails include a 2019 exchange with informal, familiar language. Epstein died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial on charges of sexual abuse and trafficking of underage girls.
