""It is TSA's top priority to make sure you have the most pleasant and efficient airport experience as possible while we keep you safe," Noem says in the video. "However, Democrats in Congress refuse to fund the federal government and because of this many of our operations are impacted, and most of our TSA employees are working without pay.""
""Recent reports indicate DHS is using taxpayer dollars and federal assets to produce and air a video message featuring Secretary Noem, in her official capacity, making political attacks against Democratic Members of Congress," Democratic Sen. Maria Cantwell of Washington, wrote in a letter addressed to the Office of Special Counsel reviewed by The Times. ""
Several California airports refused to play a Department of Homeland Security video featuring Secretary Kristi Noem blaming Democrats for delays linked to the federal government shutdown. The video ran for travelers waiting in Transportation Security Administration security lines as the government entered its third week without funding after Congress failed to pass legislation. Noem states that TSA prioritizes passenger experience and that many operations are impacted while most TSA employees are working without pay. Airports that opted out include John Wayne, Hollywood Burbank, San Diego, San Jose Mineta, Sacramento, Oakland and San Francisco; Los Angeles International did not respond. Some officials called the video inappropriate and Senator Maria Cantwell requested an investigation into a possible Hatch Act violation, citing use of taxpayer funds and federal assets for political messaging.
