Two phone calls occurred last year between the vice president and the former president. The first call followed a rally incident in Pennsylvania in which the former president was shot in the ear and blamed the vice president's rhetoric. During that call the former president complimented the vice president, promised to tone down his rhetoric, mentioned his daughter Ivanka as a fan, and asked that greetings be passed to her husband. The vice president remained skeptical, calling the former president a con man. A second call on election night included conciliatory compliments and praise of her name.
