In a significant decision against President Trump's efforts to dismantle the Department of Education, U.S. District Judge Myong J. Joun issued a preliminary injunction. This ruling mandates the reinstatement of approximately 1,400 federal employees who had been laid off following a planned reduction-in-force. Judge Joun emphasized that the Department cannot function effectively without adequate staffing and characterized the layoffs as a questionable maneuver to undermine congressional authority. The judge's decisive ruling reflects ongoing tensions regarding executive power and the limitations of government employment reductions under shifting political landscapes.
A department without enough employees to perform statutorily mandated functions is not a department at all," Joun wrote in his order.
This court cannot be asked to cover its eyes while the Department's employees are continuously fired and units are transferred out until the Department becomes a shell of itself.
