Texas Republicans plan to redraw congressional maps, influenced by President Trump, which may change five seats to GOP favor by 2026. This legal maneuver is reminiscent of a Republican mid-decade redistricting in 2003. Democrats denounce the action as a partisan power grab, which undermines the established practice of redistricting every ten years post-Census. Vice President JD Vance criticized California's congressional map, arguing it disproportionately favors Democrats despite Republican votes. However, California's map was shaped by a bipartisan commission, questioning the validity of the gerrymandering claims made.
The gerrymander in California is outrageous. Of their 52 congressional districts, 9 of them are Republican. That means 17 percent of their delegation is Republican when Republicans regularly win 40 percent of the vote in that state. How can this possibly be allowed?
Texas Republicans, at President Donald Trump's urging, are preparing to redraw the state's congressional map in a way that could flip up to five seats to the GOP in 2026.
Democrats have called the move a partisan power grab and an affront to the traditional practice of drawing new congressional districts every 10 years, after a new Census.
Vance's description of California's map as a 'gerrymander' also is doubtful - it was drawn by a bipartisan commission, not Democratic legislators. Gerrymandering is done by politicians and political parties.
