"I made a mistake and I had a lapse in judgment and there was a lack of faith. I take full responsibility for those actions. Since then, I've reconciled with my wife, Angel. I've asked God to forgive me, which He has. And my faith is as strong as ever."
"Congressman Gonzales has said he will fully cooperate with the investigation. We have encouraged him to address these very serious allegations directly with his constituents and his colleagues. In the meantime, Leadership has asked Congressman Gonzales to withdraw from his race for re-election."
House Speaker Mike Johnson, Majority Leader Steve Scalise, and Conference Chair Lisa McClain issued a joint statement calling on congressman Tony Gonzales to drop his reelection bid. This followed Gonzales's public acknowledgment of a sexual relationship with Regina Santos-Aviles, a former staffer in his congressional office who died by suicide in September 2025. Gonzales admitted to making a mistake and lapses in judgment during a radio interview, stating he has reconciled with his wife and sought forgiveness. The House Ethics Committee is conducting an ongoing inquiry into his actions. Gonzales claimed his last contact with Santos-Aviles occurred in June 2024, before her death.
