House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries declared the Department of Justice illegitimate under President Donald Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi. He accused ICE and Border Patrol agents of brutalizing American citizens and law-abiding immigrants and called for independent investigations and prosecutions of agents who violate the law. Jeffries cited the arrest of former CNN host Don Lemon while covering an anti-ICE protest in St. Paul, where activists stormed a church; Lemon maintains he was acting as a journalist. The protest followed incidents in Minnesota where federal agents shot and killed Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Jeffries demanded an explicit prohibition on detaining or deporting American citizens.
