ICE Detains Brooklyn Deacon During Immigration Raid: Report
"We keep being told this is public safety but how is my community safer now that an innocent deacon was detained? This is horrible. We can't allow this."
"Across the nation, we have seen aggressive escalations by ICE that raise serious concerns on the use of excessive force and a lack of accountability."
"As New Yorkers, we will stand up for the rights and dignity of every neighbor."
ICE agents detained Sebastian Renoj Ordoñez, a longtime deacon at Jovenes Cristianos on Bay Ridge Parkway, as he stepped out of his home early Thursday. Ordoñez is originally from Guatemala and has been part of the Bensonhurst community for nearly 20 years. Community leaders and residents demanded answers and called for his release amid a surge in ICE activity across the area. Councilwoman Susan Zhuang questioned how the detention served public safety and joined calls to halt immigration enforcement locally. City leaders cited recent detentions that raised concerns about excessive force and lack of accountability, and federal officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
