House Dem demands furloughs end for nuclear security agency
"These federal employees play a critical oversight role in ensuring that the work required to maintain nuclear security is carried out in accordance with long-standing policy and the law"
"The NNSA, our umbrella organization, it's been grouped together for 25 years. We've never furloughed workers in the NNSA, this should not happen, but this was a long as we could stretch the funding for the federal workers."
"Undermining the agency's workforce at such a challenging time for U.S. global leadership diminishes our credible deterrence, emboldens our international adversaries, and makes the world a more dangerous place."
The government shutdown triggered furloughs at the Energy Department, affecting nearly 80% of federal personnel within the National Nuclear Security Administration on Oct. 20. Rep. Dina Titus and 26 other House members urged Energy Secretary Chris Wright and NNSA Administrator Brandon Williams to reverse the furloughs and restore oversight capacity. Wright announced the furloughs while visiting the Nevada National Security Site, saying NNSA exhausted funding for federal personnel but preserved some contractor work. Concerns include weakened oversight of stockpile stewardship, gaps for Navy and Air Force modernization counterparts, and increased risk to U.S. credible deterrence.
