Democratic lawmakers from the Texas state house fled to Illinois and New York to prevent the Republican-controlled legislature from passing a gerrymandered congressional map. New York Governor Kathy Hochul supported the exiled Democrats, stating the need to counter any Republican advantages. She is exploring options for redistricting in New York. Legislative leaders are in favor of rewriting redistricting rules to allow mid-decade adjustments rather than adhering to a ten-year schedule based on the U.S. Census. Any amendment must pass two legislative sessions before going to voters.
If Republicans are willing to rewrite these rules to give themselves an advantage, then they're leaving us no choice. We must do the same... I'm exploring with our leaders every option to redraw our state congressional lines as soon as possible.
We're already working on a legislative process reviewing our legal strategies and we'll do everything in our power to stop this brazen assault.
