Goodbye Broadview 6, Hello Broadview Sanctions - Above the Law
Six protesters known as the “Broadview 6” faced felony charges after a September 25, 2025 confrontation outside an ICE detention facility in Broadview, Illinois. Protesters briefly blocked an ICE agent’s car while he attempted to enter the building. The prosecution alleged conspiracy to prevent an officer from performing duties through force, intimidation, or threats. Judge April Perry stated she had reviewed many grand jury transcripts and had never seen prosecutorial behavior like what appeared in these transcripts. Defense attorney Chris Parente sought the grand jury transcript for First Amendment concerns and cited prior misconduct in a related case involving Marimar Martinez, whose charges were dropped after ICE agents rammed her car.
"“I have read hundreds, if not thousands, of grand jury transcripts involving prosecutors who are the most junior of prosecutors to several U.S. Attorneys who appeared before the grand jury,” Judge April Perry told the parties. “I have never seen the types of prosecutorial behavior before a grand jury that I saw in those transcripts.”"
"The prosecution of the “Broadview 6” arose out of a minor confrontation on September 25, 2025, when protesters outside an immigration detention facility momentarily blocked an ICE agent's car as he tried to enter the building. On October 23, a grand jury charged six of the protesters with multiple felonies, including conspiring to prevent an officer from discharging his duties by force, intimidation, or threat."
"At the Broadview ICE facility, an ICE agent tried to run dozens of protesters over with an SUV as we walked on a public crosswalk. He kept driving for about a full football field until ICE barraged us with pepper balls. pic.twitter.com/bGX7vh5o84- Kat Abughazaleh (@KatAbughazaleh) September 26, 2025"
"The case had obvious First Amendment issues, and Chris Parente, attorney for Brian Straw, agitated for months to get the grand jury transcript. Parente had reason to suspect that the US Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois would play fast and loose, as they did with another of his clients, Marimar Martinez. Martinez was shot multiple times by ICE agents, and then charged with ramming the agents' car. In fact, the agents rammed Martinez's car, and the charges were later dropped."
