"Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem (affectionately known as "ICE Barbie") decided to pay Portland a visit yesterday. The trip was unexpected by city and state officials. Noem toured the local ICE facility, which meant a whole street was closed, and the facility abruptly canceled scheduled immigration appointments. Noem was followed around by prominent right-wing social media figures, including David Medina, of Sherwood, who previously faced charges for taking part in the Oregon Capitol riots and later the Jan 6 US Capitol riots."
Portland Mercury requests small monthly contributions to support local news reporting, arts and culture coverage, event listings, and hosted events. The newsletter reports a sunny fall forecast with a high near 64 degrees. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem made an unannounced visit to Portland, touring the local ICE facility and prompting a street closure and abrupt cancellation of scheduled immigration appointments. Noem was accompanied by prominent right-wing social media figures, including David Medina and Nick Sortor. The Portland Police Bureau faced a federal investigation after Sortor's arrest, while the city attorney cited DHS agents' use of excessive force and discriminatory access practices at the facility.
