Ghislaine Maxwell is serving a 20-year federal sentence after her 2021 conviction for conspiring with Jeffrey Epstein to sexually abuse children. Jeffrey Epstein died in a federal jail in 2019; the official cause of death was listed as suicide. In July, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche interviewed Maxwell in prison. About a week after that interview, the Department of Justice transferred Maxwell to a lower-security facility. Maxwell's lawyer, Arthur Aidala, said he did not know the reason for the transfer and declined to speak about certain matters. Aidala characterized meetings with the government as involving quid pro quo and referenced plea bargains, drawing criticism from Neera Tanden.
