Gavin Newsom is advocating for the gerrymandering of California's U.S. House seats in response to Donald Trump’s influence in Texas. Many Democrats support Newsom's strategy, despite previous commitments to a nonpartisan redistricting system. Democratic congressional members, although satisfied with the current mapping, are rallying behind Newsom’s emergency approach. Arnold Schwarzenegger, former governor and advocate for the state's independent commission, may oppose Newsom's plan. His chief of staff indicated Schwarzenegger believes in fighting gerrymandering to enhance political accountability and may engage in national advocacy against partisan redistricting.
“His position is that two wrongs don't make a right,” Daniel Ketchell, Mr. Schwarzenegger's chief of staff, said in an interview. “He is still committed to independent redistricting in every state around the country.”
Mr. Schwarzenegger could jump into the national fight over redistricting to try to save the system Mr. Schwarzenegger championed in California.
