Former NYPD commissioner allegedly sold $15K promotions: Lawsuit
Briefly

Four former high-ranking NYPD officials filed lawsuits claiming they were forced to retire after Mayor Eric Adams appointed his associates to key positions, including allegations of selling promotions. The former officials, Essig, Pontillo, Veneziano, and McCormack, allege they were retaliated against for reporting corruption and favoritism within the department. Specific allegations include Caban handpicking individuals for prestigious roles and selling promotions. Legal representatives emphasize these actions compromised leadership quality in the NYPD, with whistleblower claims suppressed to protect corrupt practices.
Essig alleges Caban skipped the official process and handpicked his buddies to positions within the NYPD's Criminal Task Force Division, which is considered a prestigious unit of the department.
Caban was allegedly selling promotions for around $15,000 and is under "federal investigation for selling discretionary promotions," according to court records.
These men, and several other former Chiefs like them, were all pushed out to accommodate Mayor Adams' handouts and to muzzle whistleblowers from exposing his NYPD buddies' corrupt behavior.
Pontillo claims he was denied raises and benefits after complaining about the improper use of body-worn cameras.
