Reporters highlighted that conditions at the migrant detention facility in Florida were severely overcrowded, with detainees packed into cages and sharing minimal sanitary facilities. Florida Democrat lawmakers described the environment as appalling, noting high temperatures, bugs, and inadequate food provisions for detainees. Some detainees, comprised mostly of Hispanic men, expressed distress and called out for help. Republican Senator Blaise Ingoglia countered claims about the conditions, insisting their presentation was exaggerated. Lawmakers noted that some reported improvements in food quality prior to their visit.
Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz reported seeing men packed in cages with 32 men per cage sharing three toilets, with only a three-foot privacy wall between them. The cramped conditions caused significant distress among detainees.
Lawmakers observed that temperatures inside the facility reached 85 degrees, and one detainee claimed they were misrepresented as they cried out for help to lawmakers. Conditions were described as appalling by Florida Democrats.
