Federal Authorities Arrest Don Lemon Over Filming of Church Protest
"Don has been a journalist for 30 years, and his constitutionally protected work in Minneapolis was no different than what he has always done," Lowell said, adding: "This unprecedented attack on the First Amendment and transparent attempt to distract attention from the many crises facing this administration will not stand. Don will fight these charges vigorously and thoroughly in court."
"It's hard to interpret this as anything other than an attempt to squash the freedom of the press," one critic said."
Former CNN host Don Lemon, now an independent journalist, was arrested by federal authorities in Los Angeles over his connection to a protest inside a St. Paul church. Demonstrators alleged the church pastor is the acting ICE field director in the city; three demonstrators have been arrested. The Department of Justice previously sought to arrest Lemon twice, but a magistrate judge and U.S. District Judge Patrick J. Schiltz refused to sign off on charges. The circumstances of the arrest are unclear. Lemon is scheduled to appear in federal court in Los Angeles. His lawyer Abbe Lowell called the arrest an attack on the First Amendment.
