In his new memoir, British restaurateur Keith McNally reflects on his past experiences with Donald Trump, who frequented his New York City restaurant Balthazar in the late 1990s. McNally found Trump to be a caricature of a wealthy New Yorker but noted that he was decent and not offensive. He describes an incident where Trump tried to convince McNally to open a restaurant in one of his properties, revealing Trump's pushy personality. McNally humorously likens Trump to King Henry VIII and expresses disbelief that Trump would eventually become president.
Even then he seemed like a caricature of a rich, pushy New Yorker with diabolical taste," McNally wrote, according to an excerpt obtained by People.
I asked the Don if that restaurant space was also for rent. 'No, that one's taken. I guaranteed it to someone else a month ago.'"
He wasn't too bright and if someone had told me he would become president, I would have said that was impossible.
Walking through a series of overdecorated spaces, we passed one that was noticeably less gaudy than the others.
