"US President Donald Trump is an avowed climate science skeptic who during his second term has followed through on promises to slash funding for renewable energies like wind, and to promote oil and gas. But the administration has also gutted agencies that produce climate information used by millions of Americans. In February, only weeks after taking office, around 800 people were dismissed from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA),"
"The site became virtually obsolete after nearly all its remaining staff were fired in early June. "There is no longer a team to keep the mission going," Lindsey said of a once-dynamic climate portal that was updated weekly and monthly with explanations about the latest impacts of climate change. "The public has still lost access to a trusted source of timely climate information," she added."
Donald Trump’s second-term actions cut funding for renewables and promoted oil and gas while dismantling federal climate-information capacity. Around 800 NOAA employees were dismissed only weeks after the inauguration, weakening NOAA’s ability to monitor oceans, climate, and issue forecasts and warnings. The agency’s climate.gov portal, which informed readers about extreme weather, sea level and temperature rise and had around 15 million page views in 2024, was impacted and later redirected to a politically controlled homepage. Nearly all remaining climate.gov staff were fired by early June, leaving the portal virtually obsolete. Former climate.gov manager Rebecca Lindsey is leading an independent relaunch at climate.us.
