Exclusive: Gaetz could be next Florida attorney general
Briefly

Former Congressman Matt Gaetz is positioned as a strong candidate for Florida's Attorney General in 2026, despite previous controversies surrounding his nomination to President Trump's cabinet. Recent polling shows him leading in a hypothetical primary against James Uthmeier. The Florida political landscape is heating up with battles shaping up over key figures like the Tate brothers, and Gaetz's popularity among the GOP base makes him a formidable player in the upcoming elections. However, a significant portion of voters remains undecided, indicating potential challenges ahead.
"2026 is going to be a dynamic year in Florida politics, for sure," Gaetz told Axios. "I'm humbled that so many Florida Republicans support me. Sometimes the AG itch doesn't go away with one scratch."
Despite the intense controversy he generated before withdrawing his nomination to be in Trump's Cabinet, Gaetz still has strong name ID and is well-liked enough among Florida's GOP base.
In a hypothetical primary matchup against Attorney General James Uthmeier, Gaetz was favored 39%-21%, according to a recent survey of likely Republican voters.
A race against Uthmeier would be no slam dunk for Gaetz. Fabrizio's poll found 40% of GOP voters were undecided.
